Molecular Specialist

The Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at the Greenwood Genetic Center has an opening for a Molecular Specialist with a background in molecular biology and/or genetics to join our team. This individual will:

  • Primarily be responsible for clinical and diagnostic data review to identify genetic variants and systematically assess their pathogenicity based on American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines.
  • Be responsible for documenting clinical information, maintain an understanding of the sample workflow, and accurately track samples throughout the testing process.
  • Closely work with the directors and assist in report writing by critically reading and interpreting data from scientific publications.
  • Investigate novel testing methodologies and participate in the development of new diagnostic assays/procedures, as directed.
  • Be responsible for training and competency assessment, ensuring adherence to established standard operating procedures, and communicating with sample coordinators and genetic counselors.
  • Provide technical oversight of various lab functions including troubleshooting of technical issues, overseeing compliance with external regulatory requirements, and communicating/consulting with technical staff, as needed.
  • Report to the Lead Director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory.
  • Have opportunities for professional development may include contribution to writing scientific papers, continuing education, teaching, networking, and ASCP certification.

Qualified candidates will have a masters or doctoral degree (MS and/or PhD) in molecular biology, genetics, or a related field and should possess excellent communication skills. Previous experience with Next Generation Sequencing and familiarity with a CLIA-approved and CAP-certified laboratory environment is highly desired but not required.
